  • Attempting to home launder pillows of any kind can have some potential risks.
  • Pillows down or poly get extremely heavy when wet. When home washers go into extraction and are off balance it can cause damage to the machine.
  • Some home washers have an agitator that can cause the pillow to twist or bunch resulting in split seams or a burst pillow.
  • Most home washers simply don’t have the capacity to properly wash and rinse away all the soils and dust. Home dryers don’t thoroughly dry poly, feathers or down. Some larger down pillows can take up to 3 hours to completely dry.
  • After home laundering stains are often still visible on the outer cover.

How often should my pillow be cleaned?

If a zip up pillow protector is used to cover the pillow, and the pillow case is changed regularly, once per year professional cleaning of the pillow is recommended.

How does Best Care clean pillows?

Since professional cleaning sanitizes, deodorizes and fluffs up the pillow and a brand new cover is used, the customer essentially gets a brand new pillow for a fraction of the cost of buying new.

Depending on your pillow’s filling we have different methods for cleaning. Poly fill, foam and down are all treated using the safest most effective method of sanitizing and deodorizing so your pillow is returned to you clean and free of allergens.

We have a specially designed pillow-vac machine for down or feather pillows. Inside the machine pillows are exposed to ozone emitting germicidal lights to kill dust mites, sanitize and deodorize the filling. While ozone is very powerful, it has a very short life-cycle. Within minutes after cleaning, the ozone dissipates leaving nothing behind.

For best results with a poly fill or foam pillow a water based method (wet cleaning) is used. Our commercial washer and dryers have a greater capacity and make sure pillows are rinsed thoroughly and dried completely.

Your clean filling is put inside a new cover (ticking) which is 100% cotton, high thread count, feather and down proof. We can even add crushed down/poly fill to increase the volume of your pillow, or make for example two standards into one queen size. High quality down or poly filling can last over 10 years when cleaned and maintained properly.

A freshly cleaned pillow can help you enjoy a more restful sleep!

Fall – Time for Sweaters

As sweater styles have changed, so have the fibres of this wardrobe staple. Sweaters are made from a variety of fibres ranging from cotton and wool to silk, rayon and acrylic. Natural fibres, such as angora, mohair, cashmere are especially popular. To add to the variety, many sweaters contain special decorative trims such as suede, leather, snakeskin, fur, sequins, and beads. Caring for these delicate knits requires special attention.

Purchasing Tips

Check to see if the sweater you like will withstand your lifestyle. If you’re active you may want a harder, tighter yarn but one that’s breathable. Soft loose yarns tend to stretch out easily. Check the seams of knits for unravelling and fraying. If the sweater has trim, check the care label to see if it’s serviceable and ask the retailer about their return policy. Many times the fabric will hold up to regular wear but often times trim is the weakest part.

Preservation Tips

Follow care label instructions closely to prevent shrinkage, stretching or pilling. Many sweaters are hand wash only. It’s usually best to lay them flat to dry. Some sweaters are gentle-cycle washable but others require dry cleaning. Avoid using alkaline based detergents on wool and other animal fibres. If you have any doubts about care procedure, trust our dry cleaning professionals.

Cleaning Care Tips

Spills that are treated immediately and professionally removed will prevent stains from developing later. Prior to any cleaning method, check knits for loose yarns and secure them to prevent further unravelling in process. If your sweater has stretched out over time from hanging improperly or regular wear, ask us to steam and block it to restore size and shape.

Storage Tips

Place folded sweaters in a well ventilated closet or folded in drawers. It’s best not to hang loose knits from shoulders; the weight can cause them to stretch. If hanging, fold sweater over a padded hanger, tube hanger or line hanger with tissue paper. Remember any delicate sweaters that require special handling are best serviced by the professionals at Best Care.

Trust our Experience

Different fabrics can present different challenges in cleaning sweaters. Trust our experience cleaning a wide range of styles and fibres. At Best Care we have a variety of processes that can be used and we will select the cleaning method safest for your sweater.

Getting ready for another year of school usually calls for at least one shopping trip. Whether you’re a teacher, parent, or student you’ve got some looking good to do this year. The most important thing for students is to be comfortable in what they’re wearing so their minds can focus on learning.

Taking care of new school clothes helps them stay fresh all year long. Today’s fashions still include jeans and T-shirts, but academics have always been more into the business casual category, for the most part. Khaki pants and sweaters go well in the fall and winter.

The kids in the pool might not be ready to think about the coming of school and fall, but it’s not a bad idea to get ready early. The best way to start is by preparing summer clothes for proper storage and getting your fall wardrobe out of storage and ready to wear.

Summer Storage
Getting your summer wardrobe ready for storage takes care and a little bit of time. The items need to be thoroughly cleaned before they go into storage since invisible stains can yellow over time, and soils in the fabric can attract insects to your home. A good thorough cleaning will ensure that these soils are removed and that no stains will oxidize and become visible during storage.

Silks and linens are the most critical, since these items are very prone to invisible stains. The key is making sure they’re cleaned and not worn before they are packed away for cold storage. Summer silks are very delicate and can develop a number of problems in storage, so it is best to have them dry cleaned before packing them away. It is very important to store your garments in proper containers.

Plastic bags used for dry cleaning are not suitable for long term storage, since they can trap air in with the garments. Other types of plastic are not suitable for storage; if the garments have even a hint of wetness-this can cause a musty smell or mildew to develop on the garments while they are in storage, or create water stains.

Storage Tips
Store your cleaned clothing in cardboard boxes in a dark, dry place that has a regular temperature, such as under your bed or in a closet. Make sure there is no direct sunlight contacting the clothing, or even artificial light, since overexposure to light has been known to cause color fading or yellowing in whites.

Be sure there are no fumes in contact with your stored wardrobe. Garage or furnace emissions often cause a discoloration in dyes.

Do not store your articles in a damp area. Doing so could cause difficult to remove mildew odours.

Fall Freshen-Up
Sweaters and coats can gather musty smells in storage. Fine haired sweaters can get pressed flat in the heat of the attic or under some other storage items in a closet. After getting the items out of storage, check for fading or small holes (the result of insect bites). If your garments look and smell good then your clothes survived the storage, but they’ll need a little bit of “freshening” to get you back in fall style.

Professional cleaning rejuvenates and gives clothes a “like new” appearance. Many insoluble soils collect in the fibres of clothing. Over time they wear away at the delicate threads until a hole eventually develops. Dry cleaning removes the soils that home washers can’t.

Impending inclement weather means scarves, rainwear, boots, wool dresses, and leather jackets. These items can be professionally cleaned and brought back to fashion. The fall months are often exciting times. The change of seasons can bring tidings of fresh beginnings.

Here are some tips for getting the most out of your wardrobe and home machinery. Some people do their laundry improperly by not sorting loads, overloading machines and using too much soap or softener. You can always bring your wash to the professionals at Best Care Dry Cleaners, we do professional wet cleaning, we enjoy it and we do it well!

People spend more time doing wash now than 50 years ago, but research shows that clothes are coming out less clean and more worn, which works when you want the distressed look, but not for regular items. Front-loading machines are preferable to top-loading machines. The agitator in the middle of the top-loading machine beats garments and knocks the dirt out of them, while the tumbling motion of the front-loader reaches a better level of cleanliness with no unnecessary roughness.

Simple Steps for Cleaning Laundry Properly

• Check pockets

• Look for Stains that may require a professional

• Sort loads by

  • 1. Colour
  • 2. Construction and fabric type
  • 3. Amount of soil

• Select proper water temperature

• Select appropriate cycle

• Add detergent/softener following instructions – high efficiency machines need less soap

• Add clothing to washer following recommended load

Drying Loads for Fewer Wrinkles & Less Drying Time

• Sort by fibre content

• Sort by weight

• Do not overload the dryer

• Select drying temperature based on fiber content

• Remove promptly

• Fold or hang right away

A good dry cleaner follows all of the steps mentioned above, plus more. Similar steps apply for your dry cleanable items.

Does club soda really work on spills? Everyone “knows” club soda is the ultimate remedy for instant stain removal, but is it really all it’s cracked up to be? Our association The Dry Cleaning & Laundry Institute (DLI) recently completed an in-depth study of the merits of club soda versus plain old water in stain removal, and as members, we’re pleased to share their findings. The quick answer is that club soda can be a help in the short term, but it is not the miracle stain remover it is made out to be.

When applied immediately to 10 commonplace food stains DLI tested, both club soda and water removed anywhere from some to most of the stain. However, neither treatment will completely remove the stains: and if left untreated the remaining stain residues can become permanent over time. On the 10 common spills that DLI’s stain removal experts used for the test, they found that after blotting a spill with either club soda or water some or most visible traces of the substance were removed; however, an analysis under ultraviolet light showed that at least a portion of nearly every stain remained after club soda or water was used.

Therefore, although it is okay to try and rinse out the stain with water alone immediately after contact with clothing, it is then also advisable to take the garment to a professional cleaner who can completely remove the last traces. Point out to our Customer Service Representative the area of the stain, the type of staining substance, and what attempts you made to reduce the initial spill. If this is not done as soon as possible, the invisible remaining residue can oxidize over time and leave a permanent discoloration later, which in some cases on certain fabrics cannot be removed.

There are also some stains that club soda actually makes worse. Ballpoint ink is almost always made up of water and solvent components. If water or club soda is tried to remove this kind of stain, it could set the stain permanently into the fabric. With ballpoint ink stains, and other combination stains, it is best to bring it to Best Care’s professional stain removal experts.

What happens to your clothes when you bring them to Best Care? Who cares for them and how do they make them look renewed and refreshed?

Your clothes are in the Best Care when they are with us! Our professional garment care specialists are trained to remove stains, solve problems, steam out wrinkles, perform minor repairs and make your clothes look the best they can.

The process starts at the counter when you drop off your cleaning. This is the best time to let us know about any stains that may require extra attention, or to identify any other potential concerns. That way we can be sure our garment experts will be able to give your clothes any extra care needed.

We identify your garments with a bar code tag system, then sort them by type, fabric content, color, and cleaning method. Although we are a dry cleaners, some garments may need to be laundered, hand washed, or wet cleaned, and we can provide that service. Other specialty items such as leathers or furs require special care. Some garments may require stain removal efforts before we clean them and others may not. It all depends on each individual piece.

Dry cleaning cleans clothing without the use of water, it’s true, but liquids are involved. Dry cleaning solution is the primary cleaning force in the process, using a fluid that cuts through grease and oily stains but does not harm most fabrics. Special dry cleaning detergents are added by a controlled system. Precision and regular maintenance is of the essence to ensure properly cleaned clothing.

Wet cleaning may resemble the home washing process because it uses water as the main cleaning agent, but that’s where the similarities end. Wet cleaning uses highly specialized equipment and additives in combination with temperature and agitation controls to clean clothing, giving them a renewed and refreshed appearance.

After cleaning we check your clothes for any remaining stains that may not have come out in the cleaning process. This is called spotting or stain removal. Any lingering stains are removed to the best of our ability using the appropriate products. These items are then re-cleaned before they go on to finishing.

Dressed to Im-Press
Near the end of the production line you’ll find the steam pressing stations. This is where your clothes are pressed and made ready to wear. Pressing is a job that requires an eye for detail, and it’s these details that help you look good when you’re wearing your professionally cleaned clothes to an important function at work or for play.

Following the steam pressing process, all of your garments are brought back together and ready for final inspection. This is where we catch things like missing buttons, stains that may need extra work, and any pressing touch up required. Any item that does not pass this quality control inspection is sent back for additional care before being assembled with the rest of your order and bagged.

That’s the process in a nutshell. Thanks for taking the tour! If you have any questions about the clothing care process, feel free to ask a customer service representative. We love what we do and we’re only too happy to talk about it.

We look forward to serving you again soon!
